The most common cause of cosmetic contact allergy
Fragrance is the single most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis from cosmetic products. This is not a clean beauty marketing claim — it is the consistent finding across decades of patch test data from dermatology clinics worldwide.
The mechanism
Fragrance compounds are not a single ingredient. A product labelled "fragrance" or "parfum" can contain anywhere from 10 to 300 individual chemical compounds, none of which are required to be individually listed under current US labelling laws. The allergic reaction is a Type IV delayed hypersensitivity response — meaning it develops over repeated exposures as the immune system becomes sensitised. This is why people often use a product for months before developing a reaction — the sensitisation builds silently and then presents as contact dermatitis that appears to have come from nowhere.
Cinnamal, isoeugenol, geraniol, citral, and linalool are among the most common individual fragrance allergens identified in the literature. These are present in both synthetic fragrance and natural essential oils.

Natural fragrance is not safer
The peer-reviewed literature does not support the claim that natural fragrance is less allergenic than synthetic fragrance. In some cases the evidence suggests the opposite.

Barrier disruption — beyond allergic reaction
Kimber et al. 2010, Toxicology Letters. Certain fragrance compounds disrupt the stratum corneum lipid matrix at concentrations commonly found in cosmetic formulations, increasing trans-epidermal water loss. → PubMed
Anderson et al. 2014, Contact Dermatitis. Fragrance-induced barrier disruption can occur subclinically — the skin is compromised without a visible reaction. The authors note this is particularly relevant for populations whose barrier is already impaired. → PubMed
Where our own label lands
Here's the honest inventory, because "fragrance-free brand" would be simpler to say and less true.
Sixteen of our seventeen formulas contain no added fragrance. One — the Renewal Cream — includes a fragrance from the base formula, disclosed on its label; we've flagged it on that product page and asked our manufacturing partner about a fragrance-free version.
Several formulas contain plant oils chosen for function: tea tree in the Clearing Cleanser (a purifying botanical with its own evidence), citrus peel oils in the Balance Gel and Dew Cream, frankincense in the Face Oil, lemon oil in the Brightening Bar. These aren't perfume — but natural oils carry natural fragrance compounds, including the limonene and linalool discussed above. If you're fragrance-reactive, the research applies to naturals too.
So the practical answer to "which of yours can I use?" is the same answer this whole site gives: read the ingredient list on the page. Every one is published in full, and the aromatic plant oils are named on it — melaleuca, citrus peel, boswellia, lemon. If the list is clear of both added fragrance and aromatic oils, that's the formula you want, and you'll be able to see that for yourself rather than taking our word for it. Patch-test either way.
